UQHC Participating at Inaugural IHF Women's Super Globe 2019
After winning the 2019 Australian and Oceania Club Championships (AOCC), the University of Queensland Handball Club (UQHC) women’s team were invited to participate in the inaugural IHF Women’s Super Globe in Wuxi, China from 1st to the 4th of August. The team were obliviously excited for this opportunity to come up against the 7 other teams in the competition, noting that 6 out of the 8 teams participating were professional teams with UQHC and New York City Handball Club being the amateur clubs. The difference in quality of play between the respective types of clubs was evident throughout the tournament.
Overall UQHC finished in 7th place, losing to A.A. UnC/Concórdia 31:16 in the quarter finals, Jiangsu Team 33:17 in the placement round before beating New York City 19:17 in the 7th place play off. From an on-court performance perspective, even winning one game at this competition is a significant achievement given Sydney University (who have competed at the men’s Super Globe every year since 2010), have only won a single game in ten years. On a personal player performance, our starting goalkeeper Jemima Harbort finished the competition with the highest number of saves by any goalkeeper while our right wing player Jane Kirk finished 5th on the top goal scorers list. We would like to congratulate these players on their performances!
There are many people that we need to thank for this tour, as without them, this tour would have never been organised and successful run. To Felicity Moore, our physiotherapist from Inspire Health; she did an outstanding job for keeping our players on the field. To our assistant manager, Darcy Parish; he excelled himself as our official translator as he speaks fluent Mandarin, he became our main way of communication with the organisers. To our coaches, Jackson Langenberg and Caleb Gahan, without their handball and coaching experiences, we would have never achieved the placing we did. The dedicated so much of their time for the team and we can’t thank them enough! To our manager Tomas Atchison, thank you for all of the behind the scenes work you have done for this team with organising flights, uniforms and other important items. Finally, to the players, congratulations for the tournament and on-ward and upward UQHC goes for future events.
